What I’ve Been Fangirling On This Week: Electric Cars!

There is something I really want to write about. I’ve fallen in love with the idea of owning an electric car. In the last few days I’ve been doing a lot of research about them and there are so many advantages that I can’t see any reason not to buy one now. Here are the five reasons why I’m determined to buy an electric car.

They cost less to run

I’ve read varying reports about how much it costs to run an electric car. First I read an article that said charging costs around 4 or 5p per mile. Then I read another that said you pay £1.20 to connect to the public chargers and after that it’s free. A phone call today with Transport Scotland put yet another figure into the ring. According to the man I spoke to, you pay approximately £20 a year for a smart card and then you pay nothing when charging. You simply connect. Without owning an electric car it’s difficult to know who is right. This is something I’ll find out when I get one of my own.

Home charging points

No more worrying about getting to the nearest petrol station. I’d simply plug it in at my house and charge it while I’m home. There are tons of things I hate about petrol stations. For example, I hate that I always end up buying junk food when I’m buying fuel. I also hate queuing up for petrol at busy times and I’m really enjoying watching the prices rise and knowing that my bank balance will take a hit as a result. There’s not a thing I can do about that.

Government help to buy

For the models I’m looking at, there is a £3,500 grant available. That will come off the price at the time of purchase, but this offer is not available for much longer. From what I’ve heard, the offer was so popular that the government withdrew it because the budget was running dry. If you live in Scotland, like me, there’s also an interest-free loan available to buy an electric vehicle. You can borrow up to £35,000 and you can repay over up to 6 years. Again, this isn’t available for long. I think the offer expires in March 2019, so it’s worth considering now.

It’s environmental good karma

Everybody knows that electric cars are better for the planet than petrol cars. They’re quieter and reduce noise pollution and they give zero emissions. This means that you’ll feel all virtuous and won’t mind using it for shorter journeys, something that I always feel bad about when driving my petrol guzzling wreck.

They’re cool AF

Thinking about the aesthetics only, they look pretty awesome. The two I’ve been looking at are the Renault Zoe in purple and the Smart ForFour in blue/black. There’s also the fact that they’re still relatively uncommon so you’ll be driving something unusual and quite possibly be the first of your friends to own one. They’re the way of the future and this is a bandwagon we should all be jumping on before we’re pushed.
